Eighteen-year-old music student Prince Chikawa of Harare is this year’s winner of the Hear Me Zimbabwe, a musical talent show aimed at identifying and nurturing talent.
The grand finale of the talent show held in Gweru over the weekend lived up to its billing, with entertainment enthusiasts having a show to remember.
The show attracted budding artists from across the country who proved that Zimbabwe has a lot of untapped talent.
The contest was won by Prince Chikawa of Harare, a music student whose choreography, guitar strumming skills and vocals stole the hearts of many including the adjudicators.
“This is a breakthrough in my career. I started to love music at the age of 10. My greatest inspiration was the late legendary musician, Oliver Mtukudzi. I am now ready to do the talent show organisers pride by recording my first album. It is always good to be appreciated,” Chikawa said.
The winner walked away with US$2 000 cash and a record contract at a South African studio.
Show organiser, Mr Talib Mahomed said, “The whole idea of coming up with such talent show is to take youths out of the streets where they are exposed to drugs and prostitution. As you can see, there is too much talent in this country. We just need more people to come together and help these youngsters show their talent. We have contracts with some recording studios in South Africa and all I can say is that a number of people who did well here will be rewarded.”
The show which gives budding artists a chance to showcase their talent could be an escape route for young people whose generation is at the mercy of drug peddlers.
