MUSIC legend Zexie Manatsa has died.
Manatsa’s son, Tendai, announced on his Facebook page this Thursday afternoon.
“With great sadness we would like to let everyone know that our Father, our Legend, Pastor and Sekuru Zexie Manatsa, has succumbed to cancer. May his dear soul rest in peace,” he wrote.
He was 78.
Besides one of his popular songs ‘Tea Hobvu’, Manatsa is famed for churning out praise songs for the country’s three biggest football clubs Highlanders, Dynamos and Caps United which still resonate with most football fans today.
He will also be remembered for churning out yesteryear hits including “Chipo Chiroorwa”, “Bambo Mwakwatila”, “Vaparidzi Vawanda”, “Mwana Waenda”, “Chechule Anavala Bottom” and “Chimwamuna Chamimba.
During his wedding in 1979, the legendary bass player attracted a capacity crowd at Rufaro Stadium in Harare, while in 1980 he was one of the local musicians who graced the independence celebrations together with Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley at the ceremonial home of local football.
Manatsa is survived by his wife Stella, six children and 14 grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at 3564 Westminister, Sentosa, Mabelreign in Harare.
