MOTORISTS have been urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads in the wake of an increase in road traffic accidents this festive season.
Statistics released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police indicate that there has been an increase in the number of traffic accidents and deaths between the 15th and 27th of December this year, compared to the same period last year.
Most of these accidents have occurred on highways and attributed to speeding and reckless driving.
In light of this, stakeholders are of the view that motorists must exercise extreme caution on the roads and promote road safety to save lives this festive season.
“We had a general increase in accidents but we continue urging our motorist to be cautious. Some are overtaking on continuous lines resulting in head on collisions, let’s take extra care on the roads,” said Earnest Muchena, Acting Director Operations, Research and Marketing at the Traffics Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
Five people were killed on Christmas Eve while several others were injured when a bus burst into flames after colliding with a fuel tanker along the Harare-Mutare Highway.
