THE government has confirmed that the new Covid-19 variant has been detected in Masvingo with the rallying call being for all Zimbabweans to get vaccinated and continue upholding World Health Organisation protocols.
The national clean-up exercise held in Masvingo this Friday was an opportunity for Vice President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care to lay bare all the facts about the Omicron Covid-19 variant which has been detected in the Province.
The Vice President challenged citizens not to let their guard down and take advantage of the ongoing vaccination programme.
“The country has witnessed a lot of complacency in most communities in the recent past and the recently reported new Covid-19 variant is a cause of great concern. Indications are that we already in the 4th wave given recent spikes in Covid-19 infections and from the samples recently tested some from Masvingo tested positive to the new variant,” said the Vice President.
Vice President Chiwenga also toured a local recycling plant Stable Packaging which produces poly-pipes for irrigation, clear plastic bags, planting pockets and paper bags from waste.
“Let us fully embrace best waste management practices such as waste separation and segregation at our communities, homes and workplaces. I want to implore upon business community to invest resources in waste recycling enterprises like what we saw at Stable Packaging,” he said.
Masvingo province is taking part in various waste management and recycling programmes in line with the National Development Strategy One (NDS1) for sustainable development.
“We have got a number of corporates and individuals who are benefiting from recycling initiatives,” Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira said.
The National Development Strategy One buttresses promotion of recycling initiatives, given its potential in the creation of jobs.
