One hundred and eighty-nine athletes have been selected to represent Zimbabwe at the 10th edition of the AFRICAN UNION SPORTS COUNCIL (AUSC) REGION 5 Youth Games scheduled set for Maseru, Lesotho from 2nd to the 12th of December.

The rescheduled 2020 Youth Games will see the country sending one of its biggest delegation after the junior athletes impressed in qualification.

The 189 athletes will be guided by 37 technical officials who include coaches, managers and medical staff.

Zimbabwe will be competing in 12 different sport codes, namely football, athletics, basketball, boxing, swimming, volleyball, tennis, judo, gymnastics, taekwondo and netball.

All the sport codes will have both boys and girls participating save for netball that does not have a boy’s competition at regional level.

Football has the biggest delegation at 40 athletes and officials combined for both the boys and girl’s category, followed by athletics that has 36 personnel.

Boxing which usually is one of the country’s strongholds is surprisingly sending through the smallest delegation of three athlete and two coaches.

Sports managers’ trainer, Shepperd Mukanhairi will be the country’s Chef de Mission and will head an 11 member management team for the games.

Zimbabwe has generally done well at regional level but without much competition at youth level in the past two years it remains to be seen how the country is going to perfume in Maseru.
