EU launches legal action against AstraZeneca due to vaccine shortages

The European Union, EU, has launched legal action against AstraZeneca.

The European Commission – the EU’s executive branch – said it was suing the coronavirus vaccine manufacturer for not respecting its vaccine supply contract, and for not having a “reliable” plan to ensure timely deliveries.

This comes after an escalation in a long-running dispute between the two sides over the supply of coronavirus vaccines.

An August deal between the EU and AstraZeneca foresaw 300 million doses for the bloc, with an option for 100 million more.

But earlier this year, AstraZeneca said its supplies would be reduced because of production issues. By the end of March, the company had sent about 30 million doses to the EU.
