Fire at world’s largest vaccine producer kills five

FIVE people have been killed in a fire at the site of the world’s largest vaccine producer, Serum Institute, in western India.

The blaze started at a building which was still under construction at the Serum Institute of India’s facilities in Pune on Thursday.

In a tweet, the Serum Institute’s CEO, Adar Poonawalla, said: “We have just received some distressing updates; upon further investigation we have learnt that there has unfortunately been some loss of life at the incident,”

“We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed.”

The company, however, said vaccine production would not be affected.

The cause of the fire has not been identified.
