The Power Personality of the Week

Smooth’s introduction to radio was in the early 1980’s. At that time TV’s were not a common feature in households and when the family TV broke down, the alternative was radio and from then on the passion for music and presentation was ignited. High School days Emity Smooth had a reputation for having a selection of cassettes with music recorded of his favourite radio station, Radio 3 and it is through that reputation that whenever parties where happening in the “hood” Emity was also invited (along with his cassette collection) to entertain.

Introduction to Radio and TV was through a friend who had a reputable events hire company that would often be hired by the Radio presenters then, working with Radio 3. The association with presenters opened up opportunities to feature on TV programs hosted by Radio presenters, in this case the programme “Teen Scene” as well as feature on the radio programmes when broadcast for Radio 3 would cross over to Montrose Studios in Bulawayo on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well as Friday Nights.

The passion for music, presentation/ Djing saw Emity Smooth gaining a reputation for being a source for great music and hence the experience and acquired skills from associating with the professionals landed him his first broadcasting opportunity in an in house hospital based radio station, Steam Radio at Mpilo hospital in Bulawayo. Concurrently that same reputation exposed Emity Smooth to MCing opportunities at events, Djing at Clubs and Gigs and any event where the DJ was required.

The move by the popular radio station 3fm(Former Radio 3) in 2004 to broadcast from the City of Gweru opened up the opportunity for Emity Smooth to audition and get acceptance as a part time broadcaster on weekend radio shifts, Saturday and Sundays, between 12pm to 3pm presenting a the programme “Cordless”. The rest is history. Backed by constant in house training workshops, seminars and the tutelage of Legends in the world of radio broadcasting, Emity Smooth acquired the necessary skills, backed by the passion and love for radio, which catapulted him to working in several entertainment events arranged by the radio stations marketing team as well become a sought after Dj/presenter by promoters. Exposure led him to working with both local and international reputable Radio, Club Djs and artistes. It is during this attachment as a presenter on 3fm that the station rebranded to become known as Power Fm.
